JCMsuite offers the possibility to efficiently compute shape and material derivatives of electromagnetic fields and derived quantities up to second order. This yields linear or quadratic approximations of the output results with respect to derivative parameters.

This feature is demonstrated in a tutorial example. There, it is utilized to compute the dependence of the reflected Fourier coefficients on geometrical and material parameters of the structure.

Parameter derivatives can be defined in the respective input .jcm files (cf. layout.jcm, materials.jcm, sources.jcm). Alternatively, they can be defined here in the Parameter section.

The setting Order is used to enable partial derivative computation up to its value. Setting it to 0 disables the derivative computation.
