The parameter is specially devoted to the suppression continuous spectrum modes within the PML region used to model the infinite exterior domain. Only modes satisfying the following condition are considered:

$\begin{eqnarray*} \frac{I_{\mathrm{max}, \mathrm{core}}}{I_{\mathrm{max}, \partial \Omega}} > \mathrm{contrast} \end{eqnarray*}$

where $I_{\mathrm{max}, \mathrm{core}}$ and $I_{\mathrm{max}, , \partial \Omega}$ are the mollified maximum field intensities within the core region and on the transparent boundary respectively.
